CATALOGUE NOTE
A Mende, (Liberia, Sierra Leone) ceremonial spoon known, with the handle carved as an anthropomorphic figure, the small face, slit eyes and diminutive nose and mouth set on a ringed neck that depicts affluence are classic features of idealized beauty in the Mende society. Very good condition.
Like Dan spoons, some Mende feast spoons are used by the elected “most hospitable woman of the village” to distribute cooked rice to fellow villagers after the rice harvest. The feast spoon illustrates and underscores the value placed upon human and crop fertility for continuity.
