CATALOGUE NOTE

The Baule believed that there was an ‘otherworld’ that existed in contrast to the actual physical reality they lived in. Blolo is derived from blo, meaning “to claim, to praise, to vaunt” and lois locational, meaning “there”.
The Baule believe that issues such as sterility can be brought on my “otherworld” mates who are jealous or unhappy for being neglected. In remedy of this a statue can be carved representing the otherworld spouse to which offerings of food or money can be given on a regular basis as well as consecrating one night a week to this “otherworld” mate by sleeping alone. These actions would bring favor with the “otherworld” mate and issues faced in this physical world should then improve.
